Woman arrested after officials find boy abused, ‘basically all skin and bone’

SAN ANTONIO —
Bexar County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a woman in her 30’s at her residence Sunday morning after they found evidence of substantial child abuse.
Deputies were dispatched to a local fast food restaurant on Bulverde Road Saturday night to find a 15-year-old boy who needed medical attention. The boy, who weighed just 70 pounds, told authorities that Marissa Monica Cano, 38, was abusing him and his two siblings. He said Cano beat the children with a baseball bat, beat them with her bare hands, frequently locked them in a garage and starved them while they were in her care. The abuse happened “everytime they did something bad,” he said.
Cano, 38, was arrested Sunday and faces two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The three children abused are related, officials said, but they are not related to Cano. Their parent lives elsewhere, leaving the kids in Cano’s care frequently.
“The kid was so emaciated that he’s basically skin and bone,” said Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar. “It’s a tragic case.”
Child Protective Services took the three children into custody after Cano’s arrest. Two other kids in the house related to Cano are also in CPS custody, though they did not show any
