Family: Teen dies after #sinus #infection #travels to his #brain The #Insider #Car

Marquel Brumley, a 13-year-old boy from MI, died Sunday after a sinus infection spread to his brain, according to his relatives. “He would ask his mom if they were done with the tests because he just wanted to go home”, said Marquel’s aunt, Nicole Alexander, in an interview with People. When the eighth-grader started noticing cold symptoms, he went to an urgent care in Flint, Michigan. Just weeks later, he was dead, after the sinus infection doctors eventually diagnosed had spread to his brain. Separately, the Cleveland Clinic stresses that sinus infections spreading to the eyes or brain are a “rare, but potentially dangerous” complication, with infections that spread to the brain potentially resulting in meningitis, brain abscess, or other life-threatening conditions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explained on its website that a sinus infection typically does not require to be treated with antibiotics in order to get better. Brumley continued to suffer from the cold symptoms for weeks and soon started to experience severe headaches. “The doctor came in and said we – he has a sinus infection, it has penetrated through the bone into the blood vessels in the brain and we see some blood clots”, Brumley’s aunt, Nicole Alexander, told WJRT. After Brumley’s pain got very severe last week, he returned for treatment to a local hospital. He was transferred to C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he was rushed into surgery. Prior to Marquel Brumley’s death, his family launched a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for his medical expenses, and in the 10 days since, the campaign has almost doubled its original funding goal of $10,000. A relative of the boy, Peggy Gilbert, on 8 March, posted on Facebook that the doctors were going to run three tests on him to figure out if he was still there or not and if he would pass even one then he is still there but if he would fail all of them, then legally he is not. “So today I am praying for one breath, just one!” Alexander confirmed about the boy’s death. Alexander was shocked by how quickly Brumley’s sinus infection turned deadly and hoped to share his story in hopes of preventing families, like hers, from facing similar fates. The 13-year-old was a straight A student, a football player and a amusing guy. “Now he’s not gonna be here anymore”, said Alexandria Brumley, Marquel’s sister. They have raised $11,680 from 335 donations after only eight days. “The love and support everyone has shown is overwhelming and so appreciated”. Gilbert said Marquel will be donating his organs.
