A 14-year-old has been charged after threats were made against a Chesterfield County school.

According to Chesterfield County Sheriff Jay Brooks, the teen has been charged with communicating threats following social media postings about violence at Central High School in Pageland.

Brooks said the teen has been taken to the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia where he’ll be held in custody pending a hearing.

Wednesday afternoon, school officials announced they would be taking some precautions in light of a threat against the school.

Brooks said extra police officers will be stationed at Central High School in the Pageland community of Chesterfield County Thursday.

The Chesterfield County School District release the following statement regarding the matter:

Earlier this evening, Chesterfield County School District was made aware of a social media message threatening a school shooting at Central High School. We immediately began working with the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office and they are investigating all potential leads. Based on information from the Sheriff’s office there appears to be no credible threat to student safety. However, in an abundance of caution we will have extra law enforcement on campus tomorrow. As always, student safety is paramount and we will continue working with the Sheriff’s Office.
