A teenager has died after she was hit by a train as she walked along the tracks on Christmas Eve.
The mainline train was heading for Penzance when it tragically hit a 19-year-old woman near Lostwithiel.
Devon and Cornwall Police were called by Network Rail at 6.30pm last night.
It is understood the 19-year-old woman – thought to be from Lostwithiel – was walking down the tracks just down from the station when she was hit.
Her next of kin have been informed.
Inspector Rob Curtis of Devon and Cornwall Police told Cornwall Live : “A call was made to police at 6.26pm by Network Rail.
“Unfortunately the female, who we believe to be 19 years old, has died and her next of kin have been informed.
“The incident is not thought to have happened at the station, but further down the tracks.
“British Transport Police are now investigating.”
The news was put on Twitter by UK Rail Updates as other users expressed their sadness.
The tweet said: “Fatality at Lostwithiel.
“Person hit by a train bound for Penzance.
“Really bad to happen this time of year.”
People shared their condolences for the young woman’s family and the rail crew on board the train that hit the tragic teenager.
South West Modelling wrote: “Thoughts go out to my on-board colleagues involved with a person being hit by a train at Lostwithiel.
“Very sad especially at this time of the year.”
